politics/poetics

Friday, August 28, 2009

the UN's special rapporteur has declared the Intervention discriminatory, as expected. Maleficent Brough weighed in to dismiss human rights as "some nicety," which reminds us why he lost his seat in the last election and had to go away. get real indeed.

the idea that human rights get in the way of access to health care is pretty stupid, given that access to health care is itself a human right (article 25, fyi). the message from canberra always seems to be that you can trade your rights in for cash and houses. but then, in a not-altogether-unexpected twist, you don't get the houses.

anyway, sod all that. next week is National Poetry Week, even in Alice Springs. i'll be reading at people while they're having their lunch at Olive Pink; do come along. myself and local poet/playwright/builder of kitchens Michael Watts will be reading at 12:30pm on Tuesday the 1st September.

this NPW the overland blog is having a poetry coup, so i'll be over there throwing half-bricks (honestly, they like that sort of thing). also, Poetica will be broadcasting one of my poems on the 5th September, so waggle the antlers of your wireless/podbot in that direction.

while I'm on the promotional, i have two stories in Award Winning Australian Writing, which was launched at MWF last week. they called me prolific in the press release. i don't feel very prolific right now, but novels will tend to eat all available writing energy.

actually i have spent the last week not writing at all, but entertaining an international special guest star, who was very well-behaved, and helping with preparations for the Famous Cupcake Dress (watch this space). i took the ISGS out to two mile and we were rained out! has stopped raining now, and everything is sparkling and beautiful. the country around here makes me so nationalistic sometimes, even when the politics do just the opposite.

Only halfbricks? I have some spare grenades and smoke bombs. You are rocking big time career-wise and this makes me very happy because you deserve it big time too.
