no bad news

Wednesday, July 15, 2009

i just wrote to garrett and crean and rudd about the productivity commission's report into the book industry, begging them to reject the recommendation to scrap parallel import restrictions. for what it's worth. i doubt i have one squillionth as much lobbying power as Dymocks but i had to throw my two cents in, since the commission evidently ignored all the other submissions by everyone except Dymocks. i'm not going into the economics of it here because that's been covered, but on a basically selfish level it would be crap to be out of a job so soon after beginning.

i note garrett has just approved a new uranium mine in SA (Four Mile, next to Beverly) so if they carry on like this they will probably approve Angela/Pamela, which means i will be out of a home in a few years too.

feeling very disappointed with the ALP right now. hmm. didn't see that coming.

at least, as i remarked in an email to a friend, when i am unemployed i will have plenty of time to turn into a crank who spends her time writing letters to government ministers.

on the weekend i fired up my landmates' projector and watched The Wiz, in memory of MJ. my older brothers performed in this musical at school and i kept thinking of them as children - disconcerting to say the least, now we are all in our thirties. it's a great musical and so full of African-American optimism i could almost remember the five minutes of Obama-related relief i indulged in last year, and the thirty seconds of Thank God It's Kevin the year before that, before he started approving uranium mines and threatening to dismantle perfectly successful creative industries. right now i am feeling a bit like Evillene singing 'don't nobody bring me no bad news,' stomping around in a sweatshop tantrum with much gnashing of my tiny sharp teeth.

goddamn. i suppose i had better make this new novel worth all the trouble.

update: found it! No Bad News.mp3

I wish you would post more often, Jen. It's a joy to hear from someone in Australia instead of hearing only from people in Melbourne for one thing. And, it's a superjoy happiness to read writing so alive and vibrant and real and original, strong and intelligent and rich, witty and soulful and smart too.

thanks for the KUTA, Paul. i've been a slack blogger, it's true. blame the deadlines (and the Piece of Cake, which isn't)

fyi melbourne was in australia, last time i checked. though at times i think it thinks it's somewhere much more important.
