that's slang for when someone's mind wanders off while you're talking to them, which happens a lot when you talk to me. i left it somewhere... along with my old unilingual self and the three pairs of sunglasses i have lost in the last week. it's just that everything in DF is so marvellously distracting, snake-weilding tarot card readers, virgen bling, stupid arguments over change, clowns, ambulances blasting regeton, traffic, weird public art installations, yelling, yelling, yelling.
i have developed an unexpected crush on mexico city. i told my friend here that it makes me feel like an ant. the sense of being swept up in a mass is strangely intoxicating. we are social insects. i think i have actually learned to navigate by pheromone.
yesterday i went to the lucha libre, the famous mexican wrestlers. i got some tips so watch out. my favourite was maximo, the fat gay one with the pink mohawk, whose specialty is mounting his opponent and trying to kiss him, which makes everyone in the crowd chant beso! beso!
and there were midgets. it was cool.
me falta dos dias, then i'll be on a p“lane for almost as long. what a horrible thought. but good to think of sydney. nothing like DF to make you crave the smell of botany bay.
six months have gone quickly. i have somehow scrabbled together a second language, written a bunch of new stuff that is mostly ideas for stuff i still have to write, learned a lot, made some friends, seen some wildlife, jumped in rivers, swum in caves, navigated weird cities, elevated my skeleton fetish, hit my mariachi threshold, and pretty much tired myself out.
oh, and edited a book and got a grant, so i am afraid i will have to take myself seriously when i get back to the real world. will i finally learn to pay attention in class?
ooh look, lucky canaries for a dollar.
