the question is of course 'why do they bother,' not 'what's wrong with our culture,' and the answer to the former seems to be the usual one - that it's essentially a pathology. cheers, rupert.
meanwhile, the writer's strike carries on in LA and elsewhere in the States. Over here there seems to be no equivalent, though there are poet's unions and writers' guilds in various states, and the Fellowship of Australian Writers.
this is bloody unaustralian. as we all know, union members are more popular with women.
