it's getting silly

Thursday, November 22, 2007

yesterday i had one of those "if you told me a few years ago i'd be doing this, i wouldn't have believed you" moments when i went on ABC local radio to talk about my astrological guide to the 2007 election. i suppose it's good to have several ludicrous career options handy... and i did manage to slip in a couple of comments about the nuclear waste dump the current mob are planning to put on my doorstep.

i'd like to prove milton black wrong. and the polls are on my side. i really can't see Labor losing this one. if i am wrong, i'll be on the first leaky boat to indonesia.

(last election i was overseas - and the result made me stay away twice as long as i'd planned.)

there was a moment on the 7:30 report the other night where Kerry gave the PM a sort of heartfelt goodbye-and-thanks-for-the-material, and it got me thinking about how used i have become to this regime, which was elected when i was eighteen years old.

if you had told me then we'd have 11 1/2 years of conservative overlords, i might have joined the electoral roll and moved to a marginal seat. as it is i'm here at thirty, a born-again first-time voter living in a fairly safe Labor one. i'm trying to remember the principles of representative democracy i was studying when this regime was elected, but i think i was too busy protesting against it. fond memories of being dragged across the foyer of parliament house...

nowdays i restrain myself to subtler pranks and astrological excuses.

it is however thoroughly humbling to see Aboriginal people in town visiting the local polling booth (you can vote early here) checking their own and their childrens' enrolments. it's not just the planets that are mobilizing.

maybe we all need to re-examine a few lessons from democracy 101. i feel like we're all out of practice. these last 11 1/2 years have been extremely tough on those who were already doing it tough. it's been a period of self-interest and moral limitation i'd like to attribute to 'the times' - but let's face it, we are the times. we make them kind, or vicious. and i reckon all this dehumanisation of disadvantaged people is getting bloody silly. i'm wondering what it's like to live in a country where people give a shit about each other.

i know it's only a question of the lesser evil, but something has to give. let's hope kevin's compassion is more than rhetoric.

by the way does anyone else think he looks like a goodluck cat?

So the election stars are good for Virgos (albeit cut-throat ones), is that what you're saying?

I have about three of those cats...they're called nanki cats. i've been told that if you have two of them with their paws held in the right direction, their power is channelled in some kind of feng shui way.

the next 2 1/2 years is supposed to be pretty good for virgos, in a karmic reward sort of way. evil virgos might get their comeuppance.

what happens if you face them the wrong way?
