school's out

Thursday, April 05, 2007

i found a life preserver the other day. i've been taking pictures of shopping trolleys, just for my own amusement, and stopped to capture one that was neatly lined up with an equally galv-tastic lightpost outside k-mart. on close inspection i realised that the innocent-looking plastic bag in its basket was neatly stuffed with yellow plastic rescue.

when they were first designing shopping trolleys they made them small - just the right size for your groceries - but over time the shops worked out that the bigger they were, the more people bought. soon the supermarkets will provide caravan-sized trailers, and people will drive away with a silver train behind them, rattling through the streets on sixteen wobbly axles.

the preserver has an expiry date of january 2013, and came from a plane somehow, and i want to open it to admire the instructive diagrams, but why waste such a gift? it is hanging above my desk, in the event of a crash.

this isn't one:

yes, the book is finished. printed, edited, spellchecked, re-checked, weighed, and the rode wound round the capstan to the tune of 'drunken sailor'. i am feeling very happy and pleasantly adrift.

it is finished, that is, until a real editor gets their hands on it and thoroughly destroys this feeling of closure by pointing out all its remaining shortcomings. i don't doubt there are plenty of them. but for the moment, i intend to lie in the (now bearable) sun, reading other people's books and revelling in this school's-out glee.

and school is indeed out: i passed my driving test this morning, and am legally allowed to hoon around in the EH. but salt lake plans have been stymied (i always thought that word was hebrew, but my dictionary says it's a golfing term). SA parks reckons lake eyre is not in fact filling up - just a little pond on the north edge, and only visible from the air. some other adventure will certainly manifest, now that i am at liberty.
