affirmations and lifestyle tips

Sunday, February 04, 2007

satan, aka the adelaide advertiser, came through with the goods. i won a whole $300 worth of books. for some reason, the idea of $300 doesn’t seem all that exciting (having a semi-consistent day job has obviously changed me), but the idea of $300 worth of books keeps me awake at night. i have to order them on the internet. i am sneaking into the shops here to feel the weight of texts and read their jacket quotes. i am trying to read reviews. does anyone even write reviews anymore? i hate relying on ama(teur)zon, but the relevant newspapers seem to be filled entirely with pointless lifestyle articles. apparently robert drewe puts dog biscuits in his septic to stop it from smelling. viva australian literature.

the letter from satan ended with, “You have proven to yourself that you are a writer!” i resent that cheerful little affirmation, right down to its exclamation mark. i feel like sending the dark lord a note telling him he is now an official demon, but i don’t think rupert opens his own fan mail.

why do people think a writer is such an exciting thing to be? gee, when i grow up i’d like to spend ten to twelve hours in front of a computer, playing games of make-believe with my invisible friends. and invisible friends are all you’re gonna get. i am so incredibly boring at the moment, i avoid social events because i have nothing to talk about except the book. no really, it’s great – just like working too hard, but without the money.

it’s clear from the above that this post is going to be nothing but whinging, so i’m going to go hang out with my imaginary friends now. they may be lame, but at least they don’t offer me any trite affirmations.

if you have a book recommendation, let me know. i’m reading carpentaria at present. it’s brilliant: extravagant, dense, confusing, and completely lacking in lifestyle tips.

can i borrow that when you have finished it? i just read secret river. it was simple and not necessarily new but kinda new in that there are few books in australia like that. i liked it. not sure how it would sit with carpentaria, but we could do a swap and see?
