i sold my soul to the devil. no, i'm not talking about the google-blogger switch. a short story of mine was published in a murdoch tabloid two weeks ago, alongside stories about Gulpilil's drunkenness and noble drought-surviving farmers and so forth. my soul went remarkably quietly. i received in exchange a $30 book voucher which i may only use in adelaide. hopefully i will eventually learn to play the fiddle well enough to win my soul back, but until then i'm waiting for the offers to roll in.

radio national rang that week, which may come to nothing but made me jump up and down with excitement like the sad, middle-aged radio national fan i am. my mentorship program thingy is beginning to be useful (ah, the power of humbugging). i've been playing with a few new short stories and will probably put a new zine out when i'm finished tinkering with them.

oh, we also had a "category B flood" last week. the roads were closed, everyone stood on the causeway and took the same half dozen photos, and life seemed exciting. now the landscape has completely changed. the grass is green instead of black and everything has grown about a foot. the frogs are so loud at night, they almost keep you awake. that river is all tinkly and clear and acting like a normal refreshing creek. yesterday i sat in it for an hour or so watching the sunset, listening to the birds, marvelling at the absence of humans, and thinking how nice it would be if heaven was that empty. i must have forgotten i was already heading the other way.

as for the travel plans, i'm not committing to anything just yet but thinking of a couple of months in Vietnam pretty soon. it all depends on other stuff and my ability to be patient with it (i wouldn't lay any bets on the latter).
