left sydney on the 1st of feb, got down to melbourne on the 2nd. i had been planning to take my time down the coast but i ran into my mate lou on the sunday, she was heading down here for sleater-kinney, and so we hitched together. a pretty low stress couple of days, short rides from kiama (got the train down - getting a ride out of sydney is like trying to hitch to the moon) slept on the back porch of an empty house, then got a truck all the way here on the 2nd day. we had to help the driver deliver rainwater tanks on the way. one to an elderly couple with a cat on a string. she kept yelling at her cow: 'shut up, cow! git beck in yer paddick!' ooh look, real yokels.
mr truckie (quote: 'i'm from adelaide. you been to south australia? crap, isn't it') dropped us right in town. since then, i've been staying at a farm in west brunswick. okay it's a suburban house, but it feels pretty damn rural. fruit trees, a chook, pickling missions and long days being crafty. bloody domesticated lesbians! no yokels in sight though. i've been blackberrying in the back lot, so my hat smells right again like it did in oregon. purple stains on everything. we eat well here.
other adventures include a jump off sth melbourne pier. that is, dan jumped, i climbed bravely down the ladder provided. reading a good weird book. went to the johnny cash movie. it was surprisingly fun, i think i pissed everyone off with all that toe-tappin' and singin' along. a relief cause after brokeback i don't want to see anything that makes me cry myself to sleep for a while. i bought a middle aged bushwalker's jacket yesterday for fifty cents, in preparation for the hike.
managed to miss schifosi on friday, damn! i guess i'll see them again. cept i'm going where city things like punk gigs don't happen. i'm getting flashes of consternation. maybe moving to alice is a really, really stupid thing to do with my life.
must keep reminding myself that all the other really, really stupid things i've done with my life have worked out fine.
i kinda miss sydney, but honestly i just miss specific humans, and they're transportable. moving back into my backpack felt like going home after only four months of being a housecat. i wondered if i should be on the road again when i was having a bit of trouble with the currency down here and remembering which side of the road people drive on...
the answer turned out to be 'the bike lane.'
